How to Become a Paralegal

Are you looking for working in the profession of law, but don’t want to commit to become a lawyer?  You can consider becoming a paralegal!  

What do paralegals do?

A paralegal, often also known as trained legal assistant, mostly works for lawyers.   They deliver daily duties as lawyers do, but they are not authorized to give legal advices, adjust legal fees or present cases in court .  

What exactly do they do depends on the area of law practiced by their lawyers and their level of experience.  Paralegals just starting off , particularly with no formal education or job training, do start with clerical tasks, such as preparing for meetings , handling phone calls , greeting clients , etc.  As more experience are acquired , they get to help the lawyers lay the foundation for cases by investigating the facts , drafting legal documents, collecting information for reports and preparing presentations of cases in court.

The very work nature of paralegals can be very nerve wrecking .  Meeting deadlines, running tight schedules, and juggling a number of jobs simultaneously are often demanded .  At the same time, the reward can be satisfying , not only working in an challenging field of profession, also earning up to potentially $100 grand each year. 

If you have outstanding communication and written skills, brilliant organization skills, ability to follow instructions, love challenges and work well under pressure , then paralegal should be a great career choice for you and you would most likely to succeed in the field.

Whether formal education is for you

Though formal education is often valued for a potential employer , a lot of paralegals have started working without any .  Most organizations, especially privately owned ones, do offer on-job training.

Decide which area of law that you are interested in and inquire more information about the educational and personal requirements for it . 

There are around 250 ABA approved paralegal programs in the states most of which offer curriculums that leads to an associate degree or certification.   Many of them do specialize in certain areas of law. 

Choosing to advance your education through online certification programs is another great choice if commuting and moving are too much of inconvinience for you . 

Search for jobs and prepare for your 1st interview

You perhaps will not have a lot of opportunities first starting off as an entry level paralegal, but you do have the right to pick organization and law type you prefer to work in.  Usually there are 3 major types of organizations that hire paralegals: law firms that are privately owned , legal departments within corporations and government legal agencies .  And their sizes, area of law practiced, personal and educational requirements, specific tasks, pays, and even work schedules range widely .  Do a thorough research before making any decision .
